As a fashion stylist, one of the key aspects of my work is always looking ahead - anticipating what’s next in the world of fashion. Whether it’s analysing designer collections, researching pieces for a client or observing industry shifts, keep an eye on up and coming trends is essential. And with the arrival of a new year, trend forecasting is even more exciting!
With January behind us, you may have already noticed a few recurring themes across brands. Many designers and retailers are aligning their collections with similar influences, signalling the key trends that will shape 2025.
To make things easier to digest (and help structure my own train of thought, because I tend to digress), I’ve broken down my key trend predictions into categories: colours, styles and patterns.
When it comes to colours, 2025 will be rich in warm, grounding hues, reflecting a balance of sophistication and comfort. It’s no surprise that chocolates, caramels and burgundies will be strong through out this year as they all tie in with Pantone’s colour of the year: mocha. Both a beautiful colour and delicious coffee.
The other colours you may see this year are soft pinks and yellows. Now, we saw a bit of this last year come through and it will continue on. These colours are a nod to gentle femininity and optimism, adding brightness to your wardrobe. Keeping in mind, you don’t have to have clothing pieces in these colours if you know they don’t suit your personal style but if you are curious and choose to explore a different colour, start with accessories.
For key styles, this year’s fashion is all about versatility and individuality. I anticipate this years trends to include soft suiting, the return of personality and sheer and suede pieces. When you’re thinking of soft suiting, think tailored and structured pieces in relaxed silhouettes. This brings together a look of being polished and comfortable.
When it comes to sheer and suede, I should mention that this doesn’t necessarily mean together (but never say never! *sings Justin Bieber*). Whilst, sheer fabrics add a delicate quality, suede brings in texture and depth. And let’s not forget, chocolate suede is already out and with the cooler season just around the corner, expect to see this more and more.
When I say the return of personality, it’s exactly that, the celebration of personal expression. One of the greatest things about personal style is adding your own flair to make it yours. I understand it can be difficult to determine your personal style when we’re constantly targeted with the latest trend and the fear that if we don’t have it, we’re missing out. But this year, I feel we will see personal style shine better than ever. Not to sound too wishy washy, but your style is exactly that, yours. You decide what it is, don’t let anyone else dictate this for you.
Beyond the individual elements to fashion and style, the larger themes that will influence this year will be the return of boho chic. This isn’t too surprising given the runway we were given in Paris Fashion Week last year by Chloe. This means we will see flowing fabrics, intricate embroidery and a free spirited aesthetic making a modern comeback.
Another theme that we can anticipate is going nautical. All aboard! The buzz from Ralph Lauren’s SS25 collection in New York and Milan last year, set the scene to expect maritime inspired details to come through this year.
When you think nautical, you can steer towards stripes. So it’s sort of a given that stripes will be a key pattern this year when it comes to fashion. Stripes are classic yet modern and you could say they’re almost always around at some point each year. I expect they are set to make a resurgence in both bold and subtle ways. The other pattern, which may seem easy to forecast because we’re already seeing it, is polka dots. Polka dots are a fun yet vintage inspired print that remains timeless. Personally, I’m not one for patterns in my own wardrobe but I did recently try on a set that had polka dots and I surprised myself with how much I liked it. The polka dots were on the smaller side, so not to be too overwhelming, but nevertheless, I gave it a go.
With all these trends circulating, the best fashion advice I can give is simple: stay true to your own personal style. We all know how fast trends come and go, especially these days, but your wardrobe should always be a reflection of who you are. It’s easy to get caught up in the hype, only to realise that a trendy piece doesn’t quite fit your story. Every day when you get dressed, you’re telling the world something about yourself - so make sure it’s an authentic representation of you.
